Far fiorire le comunità
Cosa hanno in comune un ex cantiere navale di Amsterdam, un’antica città dell’entroterra siciliano e un quartiere storico di Napoli? Sono luoghi che, contro ogni aspettativa, sono riusciti a trasformarsi in comunità vive. Durante i talk di Milano e Roma abbiamo incontrato persone che, a un certo punto, hanno deciso di non aspettare che i luoghi cambiassero da soli.
Florinda Saieva ci ha raccontato di Favara, una città con radici antichissime ma quasi dimenticata nel dopoguerra fino al tragico crollo del 2010, conseguenza del degrado del cento storico. Ma subito dopo, grazie al contributo di arte contemporanea e architettura, è diventata una destinazione culturale internazionale.
Tim Vermeulen ha portato il caso di NDSM, un ex cantiere navale che, grazie alla collaborazione tra artisti, progettisti, investitori e istituzioni, da spazio abbandonato è diventato uno degli ecosistemi creativi più importanti di Amsterdam.
Con Susy Galeone abbiamo scoperto come Rione Sanità, un quartiere meraviglioso al centro di Napoli che per anni è stato associato a marginalità e fragilità sociali, sia diventato un modello riconosciuto di rigenerazione culturale e partecipazione.
A queste esperienze si è aggiunto il punto di vista di Fondazione CON IL SUD, che da anni sostiene percorsi di rigenerazione e innovazione sociale nei territori del Mezzogiorno. Insieme parleremo di cosa serve per far fiorire una comunità.
Dalla ricerca alla pratica: Il Prisma con Specific x Baroni 85
Baroni 85 è il luogo in cui la nostra ricerca incontra un contesto reale. Siamo al Gratosoglio, periferia sud di Milano segnata negli anni da fragilità sociali, dispersione scolastica e carenza di opportunità per i più giovani. Qui, un’ex scuola è stata trasformata in centro comunitario grazie al Comune di Milano e a una rete di associazioni.
Oggi Baroni 85 ospita attività educative, culturali e creative rivolte soprattutto a ragazze e ragazzi tra i 14 e i 21 anni. Ma il suo potenziale va oltre. Il lavoro che vogliamo portare avanti guarda alla sua prossima evoluzione: trasformare Baroni 85 in un nuovo concetto di scuola basato sulle passioni, dove ragazze e ragazzi possono esprimere i propri talenti e immaginare nuove possibilità per sé stessi e per il quartiere in cui vivono.
Ma come si trasforma uno spazio di supporto in un luogo in cui poter crescere e riconoscersi? È da questa domanda che nasce la collaborazione tra Il Prisma e il collettivo Specific: una piattaforma culturale interdisciplinare che lavora sulla trasformazione degli spazi attraverso mostre, interventi artistici e progetti condivisi con artisti e comunità locali. Insieme vogliamo sviluppare interventi capaci di incidere sulla bellezza dello spazio, sul significato che può assumere per il quartiere e sul coinvolgimento delle persone che lo vivono.

Making Communities Flourish
What do a former shipyard in Amsterdam, an ancient inland city in Sicily, and a historic district in Naples have in common? They are places that, against all expectations, have managed to transform themselves into thriving communities. During the talks in Milan and Rome, we met people who, at a certain point, decided not to wait for places to change on their own.
Florinda Saieva told us about Favara, a city with ancient roots that was almost forgotten in the post-war period, until the tragic collapse of 2010, a consequence of the deterioration of its historic centre. Soon after, however, thanks to the contribution of contemporary art and architecture, it became an international cultural destination.
Tim Vermeulen presented the case of NDSM, a former shipyard that, through collaboration between artists, designers, investors, and institutions, transformed from an abandoned space into one of Amsterdam’s most important creative ecosystems.
With Susy Galeone, we discovered how Rione Sanità, a wonderful district in the heart of Naples that for years was associated with marginalisation and social fragility, has become a recognised model of cultural regeneration and participation.
These experiences had been complemented by the perspective of Fondazione CON IL SUD, which has supported regeneration and social innovation processes in Southern Italy for many years. Together, we will discuss what it takes for a community to flourish.
From research to practice: Il Prisma with Specific x Baroni 85.
Baroni 85 is the place where our research meets a real-life context. We are in Gratosoglio, on the southern outskirts of Milan, an area that over the years has been marked by social fragility, school dropout rates, and a lack of opportunities for younger generations. Here, a former school has been transformed into a community centre thanks to the Municipality of Milan and a network of associations.
Today, Baroni 85 hosts educational, cultural, and creative activities aimed primarily at young people aged 14 to 21. But its potential goes further. The work we want to carry forward looks toward its next evolution: transforming Baroni 85 into a new concept of school based on passions, where girls and boys can express their talents and imagine new possibilities for themselves and for the neighbourhood they live in.
But how can a support space be transformed into a place where people can grow and see themselves reflected? This is the question behind the collaboration between Il Prisma and the Specific collective: an interdisciplinary cultural platform that works on the transformation of spaces through exhibitions, artistic interventions, and projects co-created with artists and local communities.
Together, we want to develop interventions capable of enhancing the beauty of the space, shaping the meaning it can take on for the neighbourhood, and involving the people who experience it every day.
